Retailers aren’t the only ones staffing up for the holidays. Professional temporary staff of all kinds is in high demand as regular employees leave in droves for year-end vacation time. If you haven’t lined up the right personnel to fill those gaps yet, you should do it now. Here is how you handle it:
Clearly Define Duties
When a new person comes in, of course they need to know what is expected of them. For a smooth transition, however, existing employees also need to understand their range of duties. For security or other reasons, that person’s responsibilities may differ from the person they replaced.
Weigh Attitude Heavily
A temporary worker is not likely to change the world in the short amount of time they are in your office. Even more important than being a superstar of skills, then, is someone who has a great attitude and can pick things up quickly. Being able to work well with the existing staff and be flexible will be just as critical as their expertise.
Avoid Last Year’s Mistakes
Before hiring extra staff, take a quick peak at how holiday staffing was handled last year as well as the result. That will help you determine how many additional people you may need, what slack can reasonably be taken up by overtime, and what tasks are better left for seasoned versus seasonal employees.
Consider Previous Temps
If you had a good experience with a particular person or agency in the past, give them a call. They are already a step ahead of because they have experience with your business and your team.
Build in Training Time
No one likes to be dropped off in an unfamiliar environment and expected to just “go to it”. Training doesn’t have to be as in-depth as it would for a permanent hire, but that doesn’t mean it should be skipped. Even if they are familiar with each task, be sure they understand your unique business processes.
If you take these steps now, you will be in great shape for the holidays. And, you never know, that temporary personnel may just “wow” you enough to become part of the permanent team. If you are hiring, there is no better way to do it than giving it a trial run!
